Cooling Towers

25/2/19

Cooling towers are potentially significant sources of Legionnaires' disease because of their ability to spread aerosol over a wide area. Consequently, they come under increased surveillance.

Cooling systems for industrial processes and air conditioning units operate at 35-45 degrees C, the ideal temperature for legionella bacteria proliferation and the towers are natural air scrubbers, providing nutrients for bacterial growth. In addition to ACoPL8, all cooling towers must be registered with the Local Authority in which they are sited.

Water contains 3 types of impurities: dissolved solids, dissolved gases and suspended matter, all of which combine to accelerate corrosion, scale build-up and microbial activity. Left unchecked within a cooling system, they can cause a variety of expensive problems.

These impurities combine to accelerate growth, but must be addressed seperately and treated holisitically.  Aquacare understand this reaction when planning cooling tower treatment regimes for ACoP L8 compliance.

Legionella risk assessments - are you compliant?

22/02/2019

Legionnaires’ disease can affect people of any age, but is more commonly associated with older people with chest complaints or compromised immunity. Legionella is not contagious; transmission is via the inhalation of bacteria-contaminated water droplets.
Potential sources include cooling towers, evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems, showers, whirlpool spas, fountains, humidifiers, ice-making machines and similar aerosol sources fed from public water.
