Our advice for businesses before reopening

If you’ve had to partially or fully close your business due to COVID- 19, we would like to give you advice on how to ensure that your water is safe for you, your staff and customers ready for when you re-open.

Before you re-open

It is very important that once you re-open, your water systems are not put back straight to use, but flushed and monitored beforehand. We cannot stress this enough.

If you are planning on opening soon, here are some useful tips to help you plan ahead and protect the quality of your water.

If your water system has been left unused for longer, a flushing regime should be carried out with valves in an open position and should be recorded in a maintenance log. There are automatic flushing systems on the market which we can help you with.

covid-tap

Taps

Run all taps individually, until the water is cold and looks clear, starting with
the closest to where the water enters the building and work towards the furthest
away.

covid-stored-water

Stored Water

Where water is stored, cisterns should be completely emptied and
re-filled with fresh water from the incoming supply.
covid-flushing

Flushing

Flushing, cleaning and disinfection should be considered for tanks, showers,
calorifiers and complex pipework particularly in larger buildings and should be
done in line with BS8858. Flush all of your toilets several times before they are used.

covid-legionella

Legionella

Be extra careful when turning on taps, showers and any other sources
of water which have been left dormant and unused. These could contain
legionella and other bacteria which can cause respiratory diseases and even
death in the vulnerable.
covid-strained-pipework

Putting strain on aging pipework

As well as health and hygiene, it’s also worth considering that turning your
water systems back on too quickly could cause pressure spikes which could
put strain on an ageing infrastructure causing bursts and leaks, as well as
pushing sediment through pipes into valves, filters and machinery, causing
damage. So again, we recommend you turn on your water systems
gradually, in order to be able to open up your business smoothly and get back
on track.
